The Council has adopted the EU’s first soil monitoring directive, creating a common framework to assess and improve soil health across Europe. The Directive supports the EU Mission “A Soil Deal for Europe,” which aims to lead the transition towards healthy soils by 2030.
Member States will set up monitoring systems to track soil condition, address contaminated sites, and report regularly to ensure comparable data across the EU. The directive also introduces measures to reduce land take and tackle emerging contaminants such as PFAS, pesticides and microplastics.
The directive now goes to the European Parliament for a final vote. Once adopted, member states will have three years to transpose the new rules into national law.
This milestone brings the EU closer to healthier, more resilient soils - essential for food security, biodiversity, climate neutrality and the well-being of future generations.
