Carbon Credits Biochar

The aim is to create carbon sinks which will help to reduce the concentration of green house gases (for example carbon dioxide) in the atmosphere and instead use the carbon to enrich agricultural soils. To create a trustworthy and functional market the project will create a standard for certification for the carbon credits by biochar as well as evaluating several practical issues.

Activities

A similar market is in place for climate compensation credits, but the difference is that carbon credits can be produced locally in Sweden and that the carbon can stay in a stable form in the soil for hundreds to thousands of years. At the same time both the research projects and field tests have shown that biochar increases agricultural productivity between 5 and 15 percent. Apart from this the risk of for example nitrogen and phosphorus leaking and causing eutrophication in the natural environment is reduced if biochar is added to agricultural lands. Therefore, we create a win-win-win situation for the climate, the agriculture and the environment!
